Herbal Health Tips: Slippery Elm Powder
The herb Slippery Elm has some amazing healing powers for both the intestinal tract and the skin. It is a very useful herb to have on hand. Below are some uses for slippery elm and directions on how to use it!
SLIPPERY ELM
Properties:
" Causes swollen tissues to contract, promotes firmness of tissue, lessons mucus discharge
" Relieves internal inflammation in mucus membrane
" Softens, soothes and protects distressed tissue
" Provides an excellent source of soluble fiber
" Heals cuts, wounds, burns, ulcers. Protects against infection and stimulates new cell growth
SLIPPERY ELM SYRUP
1/2 cup cold water
1 teaspoon Slippery Elm powder
With a fork or small whisk, mix cold water and Slippery Elm in a small saucepan. Stir constantly, heat to
simmer. Simmer 2-5 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Cool. Refrigerate. Keeps in refrigerator up
to one week.
SLIPPERY ELM TEA
2 teaspoons rough bark or powder
1 cup water
Simmer 15 minutes over very low flame. If using powder, strain after simmering.
Uses:
" For Diarrhea: Give 5 cc of the syrup per 10 kilograms of body weight 3-4 times daily
" Vomiting: Give 5 cc of the syrup per 10 kilograms of body weight before each meal. Feed very small meals 4 times daily.
" For Burns, Ulcers, Sores, Hot Spots: If possible, shave or clip area first. Make Slippery Elm syrup. If available, add 5 drops Calendula Extract to Slippery Elm syrup. Mix in enough Slippery Elm powder to form putty-like mass. Hold against affected area for 3 - 5 minutes, 2-4 times daily, or bind on with soft cotton strips.
